Legends of the Wild

Kenya’s Untamed Leopard Kingdom

Join Andy in January 2026 for a very focussed 6 night 12 drive safari targeting the beautiful leopard in a private conservancy where respectful off-road driving is the norm. After a highly successful recce, where we saw and photographed 6 different leopards in 3 days (including a black one) we have high confidence of seeing and photographing the normally elusive leopard on our safari. Add to this the chance of encountering one of Kenya's few packs of wild dogs and you have a safari with a difference. It's the best leopard location in East Africa.

Guided by expert local Masai drivers and guides, who are amazing at getting you in the right place at the right time, with a maximum of 4 vehicles per sighting (we were often alone) it's simply the leopard hotspot of East Africa. With all guide services and comfortable accommodation in our own exclusive camp included, plus a carbon offset conservation donation, this is your chance to capture extraordinary moments and create memories on a truly epic expedition.

Don't miss out—book your spot now for this once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience!

Safari Details

The Recce - So we began to hear about this camp as a place to go and photograph a regularly seen black leopard but we ignored it as we didn't want to gamble on a safari for just one single animal as many things could happen before the trip. Then, after speaking to local guides, it became apparent that the camp and the surrounding area has become a real hotspot for leopards so we decided to go and have a 6 drive, 3 night recce. Wow is all we can say!!! We photographed leopards on EVERY drive, tracking off road when needed, and had just simply incredible access to these normally elusive cats. All the images you see in this brochure were taken during these 6 drives, it was simply incredible. We saw a mixture of males and females, plus a 9 month old cub who was amazing. In fact this cub was the highlight of the trip as we spent two hours alone with him sleeping in the clear less than 10m from our vehicle. Incredible.

The leopards - they are present because of the density of prey species locally, we saw Dik Diks literally every 10 ft!  We generally find the leopards when they are walking / patrolling their territory or hunting. This means they are moving a lot, which gives us a variety of habitats to photograph them in, and lots of changing light too. We do night drives here, as the leopards are used to it, you can get very different images and all lights are pointed with total respect and they are not illuminated when hunting.

That black leopard - Mentioned above, we have deliberately downplayed this as it's ludicrous to come hoping for just one leopard. We did see her at night, and she was beautiful, but since she had small cubs she was being elusive. So we expect her to be back on form during this safari and she will always get some priority, but this tour is targeting all the leopards there as any leopard sighting is a mega one! But having the chance of a black leopard is simply incredible!

Night photography - we will be out after dark tracking leopards and you can get some interesting images of them as you can see here....

Vehicles - open and designed for photography and bushwhacking. There are low angled slots and some seats will be removed but they are designed for the job. Andy sits at the front with his Masai driver, the Masai tracker sits on top, and you have the freedom of the back rows to move around. And move around you must, because of the nature of leopards and the habitat you must not come and expect to sit in your seat and have a perfect shot, often you will have to move for a clear shot! Please read the section below "who should come on this tour" to see if the nature of the tracking experience will suit you! Here are some shots of the type of vehicle that we will use, there are a few different configurations but this gives you the general idea....

Other wildlife - our main focus here are the leopards and if we get the chance the wild dog pack that roams through the area (one is collared so we can track them). Of course there are elephants, giraffe, plains game and other species but we will rarely stop for these as they can be shy. Therefore please do not think of this as a traditional stop and photograph anything safari, this is a focussed leopard safari and that is what we will always be looking for. So if you are a first timer on safari then our more general Legends of the North  Rhino, Elephant & Leopard Safari 2026 might be a better bet for you (click here for this one).

Accommodation and food - we will be in our own private camp just 5 minutes drive from their main camp, it's secluded and on the banks of the river. It has the feeling of a mobile camp yet with permanent cottages, rustic and comfortable. They have basic furniture, mossie nets, private bathrooms and shower (under the stars sometimes) with 24 hour hot water and are nice places to be. A perfectly good place for us and with such an "out of africa" charm. Food is a simple buffet with a main course, sides and a desert. Special diets can be catered for. A brunch will be taken at a special location in the bush on some mornings, at the camp there is a lovely open boma where we can eat and relax during the day. The camp is very eco focussed, it is dependant on solar power and uses all sustainable tourism principles. It's private and Andy loved it.

Daily routine - your day starts at 6am with morning coffee / biscuits and then we head out at 620am ish until 10am (the leopards can be active late here). We will then either return to camp for breakfast or have a brunch outside. Then you can chill until 4pm when we meet for coffee and cake before heading out again. At dusk we pause for sundowners and snacks before we begin the evening tracking session using lights. We return to the camp at 8pm ish for dinner and bed, usually we go straight into dinner.

Travel - Included in the cost is your meet and greet at JKIA in Nairobi, transfer to a local hotel overnight, your internal flights with extra baggage and all transfers on return plus a day room before departure.

As you can see this will be an awesome safari, both for the photography and the experience of being in a beautiful place.

Our safaris are relaxed, personalised and fun, we get great pictures and have a great spirit too.

Finally here's some pictures of the camp and you can see it's great!

Why an Andy Rouse Safari?

Many of you will come with Andy because you've been with him before and you know that he delivers as much as he can. Of course people will compare safaris like for like but this is a mistake as nothing is left to chance and nothing is done on the cheap!! In short you get what you pay for. You will also know that Andy hates putting all this stuff down but here's a few reasons why we are good at what we do and offer a great package....

  • One of the most experienced professional photo guides with you in your vehicle, leading from the front
  • An exclusive camp just for our group so a real "Out of Africa" feel
  • An amazing local Masai guide team with incredible eyesight and knowledge of the leopards, they know where we want to be and get it right every time with Andy's guidance
  • TTA bonding so you know that you money is handled professionally and is safe with us as we only deal with reputable and established companies
  • An eco focus with camps that are solar powered and work with local communities for conservation. Plus our own carbon offset donation too.
  • Booked via one of the most reputable safari operators in east africa
  • A social and fun atmosphere throughout

In conclusion an Andy Rouse safari is a great experience!

Will this safari suit you - the essential facts!

We have put this section in as it's very important that anyone considering coming on this tour reads it. We are always 100% honest with our clients so there are no surprises when you arrive.

When we go offroad it can be slightly rough, we will drive very slowly and carefully but there will be thorn bushes that will try to come in the vehicle, you will be warned and have time to get out the way but you need to know we will be bushwhacking! Now because of the habitat, and the way that leopards move, you cannot expect to sit in your seat and have a clear view. Sometimes it might be but there might be grass from where you are sitting, whereas for others it will be clear. The vehicle will always stop in the best place for the leopard and the sighting, it will be upto you to move in the vehicle to ensure a clear shot. Andy will be at the front controlling it for everyone BUT it's sometimes impossible to get a clear shot for everyone, whereas other times it's easy, so you have to understand that moving is essential. There is a low angle slot at the front that you will share between you.

The camp is rustic and comfortable but not luxurious, the food is hearty but not the same as other camps you may have been to. Finally you must not think about this as a general safari where you will photograph lots of species, you will not!!! We will be 100% focussed on leopards and will be constantly searching for them - yes if we see something amazing we may stop but it will be unlikely if it's not a leopard or a wild dog!!!

So that's that, all the slight negatives, which is just our way of being honest. It's an easily manageable trip for anyone!

Kit

Full info will be given in plenty of time for the trip. But you can be anywhere from 100mm to 500mm! The most essential tool is to have a decent zoom lens, as we will always be changing positions and distance. Everything will be hand-held!

Carbon Offset

As a responsible tour operator we are acutely aware of the effect that travel has on the planet. Therefore we have calculated the carbon offset for everyone participating on this this trip, assuming everyone flies from London, using an established tourism method.

Instead of using the money for carbon credits or other such schemes we have decided instead to donate this money to a conservation charity working in an the local area and with species we might encounter.

The wild dogs in Kenya are in need of continued research and we are therefore donating the equivalent carbon offset funds to the Painted Wolf Foundation. They  support many local painted dog initiatives across Africa. This strategy aims to make a transformational difference to the future of the painted dog and we are proud to support them.

Price and booking

The costs for this wonderful safari is £8495 per person. It may seem like a lot for just a single animal focussed trip but the camp knows they are the best in East Africa for leopards and set their price accordingly. This is comparable to similar safaris and of course you have Andy leading you all the time. Don't forget this includes return local flights too!

The price includes all accommodation from arrival to departure, all meals at camp, all drinks (except premium drinks), laundry, all pickups and transfers and return internal flights with additional baggage allowance.

The price excludes your international flights (see below),  tips (driver and hotel), meals in Nairobi on the 22nd and 29th and items of a personal nature.

Payment - A deposit is required to secure your place of £1500 per person. You will be provided with a booking confirmation on receipt of this deposit. The balance will be split and will be due 120 and 60 days before departure.

Cancellation Policies - Our cancellation policies are strict and come from experience. We operate a strict non refundable policy to protect the other clients on the tour. This applies to both deposit and balance. Therefore it is a requirement of booking that you take out comprehensive travel insurance to cover all eventualities. By booking this safari you agree to these conditions and no discussion will be entered into. If we postpone then your payment will be held over for a replacement safari at a later date or you will of course be entitled to a full refund. If you have to cancel then we will provide you will all the necessary documents for an insurance claim.  In some instances it may be possible to fill your place at short notice, at which point you will receive a partial refund of monies paid, but this very much depends on the time of the cancellation and not guarantees can be made.

International Flights

We will give you full details of arrival and departure timings to allow you to book your international flights with your favourite airline.

Managing Expectations

Unfortunately in light of recent experiences we have been forced to add this section. Photographers see Andy's image collection and always expect to get the same on a trip. You have to realise that Andy has been a professional photographer for a long time! All of the images in this brochure were taken during 6 drives on his recce, he saw a leopard on every drive and the black leopard once.

All his clients know that Andy and his guide team try their absolute best to get everyone the best photographic opportunities possible, but of course this can be out of our control as the wildlife has other ideas!!! So whilst we expect to see and photograph leopards, we absolutely cannot guarantee in anyway shape or form that you will see leopards. You must come with this realistic expectations, we do not make false promises. What we can promise is that the team will work 150% to give you the best chances and best experiences possible. That is GUARANTEED!!
