The tiger is a worldwide and instantly-recognisable icon that signifies power, good luck and courage. In the worlds of fashion, entertainment and education, the image of the tiger is used more than any other animal on this planet today. From an early age we learn about the tiger and we are exposed to it in different ways throughout our lives. So how we could have let such an iconic emblem of nature get to such a sorry state of affairs, where the very future of the species hangs in the balance? There are now fewer than 4,500 tigers left in the wild and with each non-natural death we are losing the fight to save the tiger. It is time to do something about this situation.

The timing of the first edition of this book was no coincidence, as 2010 was a big year for tigers worldwide. It was the Chinese ‘Year of the Tiger’ and many conservation-focussed organisations, together with financial institutions like the World Bank and individual countries, designated a special Year of the Tiger. It worked, with public awareness of the issues raised to an all time high and fundraising efforts doubled. I did my bit too and a good proportion of the sales from the first edition of Tigers, a Celebration of Life were donated to several organisations to help make a difference.

Now, this second revised and updated edition of the book, will continue this good work with money being donated from the sales of the special Collectors Edition to a great local conservation project in Ranthambhore called Tiger Watch. You can read more details on this below.

Anyway check out a few pages from this stunning book...

A book for all tiger and big cat lovers

Tigers, a Celebration of Life, is a 96 page book, printed on beautiful paper and packed with great, award winning images and thoughtful writing. You can read the stories behind my major award winning tiger images, including the famous Machali fight shown above (Highly Commended in the BBC WPOTY). With a thought provoking essay on tiger conservation and the future by Dr Sarah Christie of 21st Century Tiger, a foreword by conservationist Mark Carwardine plus a hints and tips page for photographers too. It's packed with great stories and awesome pictures, and plenty of Machali too for fans of this great tiger!

Tiger Watch

In the first edition of this book I gave money from the sales of the Collectors Editions to great organisations like 21st Century Tiger. This time I wanted to do something more local, to an NGO that directly works with the individual tigers that I love and work with. I first met Dr. Dharmendra Khandal a few years ago and was really impressed with his vision of empowering the local tribes that were accused of tiger poaching. This model is the only way to stop tiger poaching at it's source and he has had great success so far.

At a time when the loss of Tiger habitat was at its peak and Tiger numbers were dwindling as a result of rampant poaching in the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, Tiger Watch was forged out of a collective but iron will to tackle a crisis that had overwhelmed both state and non-governmental resources. Fighting many battles at ground zero, Tiger Watch not only seeks to protect the Tiger, but also works to preserve the entire landscape, and continuously re-defines wildlife conservation in Ranthambore and its environs.

An organisation of like-minded individuals, Tiger Watch, was founded by the Late Fateh Singh Rathore in 1996. Fateh was once affectionately and appropriately re-christened ‘ Fateh Singh Ranthambhore’ by the Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in acknowledgment of his mammoth contribution to Ranthambhore’s success as one of the worlds premier Tiger habitats during his stint as the Reserve's Director.  Today, Tiger Watch is led by  Fateh's protege, Dr. Dharmendra Khandal and applies its expertise to offer innovative and practical solutions to the challenges faced by an ever-changing ecosystem. Sitting at a unique vantage point, we are privileged to aid the Forest Department in augmenting their resources in creative ways to address the various challenges faced in the management of the famous but fragile Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve. Thus, Tiger Watch leads by example and continues to break new horizons in the world of conservation.

£10 from the sale of every Collectors Edition will be donated directly to Tiger Watch for their valuable work on tiger conservation.
