About Andy Rouse

Andy Rouse is an inspirational wildlife photographer who is well known the world over. A unique and charismatic figure he is famed for his ability to capture moments from the lives of animals and birds in the wild from a different view point and often from his trade-mark stance, that of being “up close and personal” to some of the most fascinating and often potentially dangerous animals. Over recent years, Andy’s photographic style has been developing to be all encompassing of the animals and their environment in order to augment his passion for telling a story and to highlight the beauty of the natural world. Andy is a charismatic presenter who is an expert on the wildlife that he photographs. His Wildlife Photographer series had great reviews, with several pick of the day choices, and some live TV promotion on Richard & Judy. He is able to carry a series on his own, or appear as a guest wildlife expert. He has also appeared on countless radio shows with tales of his exploits and has also taken part in several phone-ins. As a professional wildlife photographer he has an extensive knowledge of animals, has no fear of even the biggest and most fearsome species and is an expert on fieldcraft (animal tracking, interpreting signs etc). He has the ability to communicate in an everyday easy-going style and is able to ad-lib and make the most of any situation. Having a camera by his side gives his presenting style some extra clout as he has a reason to be in close proximity to the wildlife that he is talking about.

Currently Andy is appearing on some TV adverts for Nikon which are being shown on the National Geographic channel. He is also starting to make online training films for phototraining4u.com as their Wildlife Master.

Digital Photography

A digital pioneer, Andy was one of the very first professional photographers to experiment and rapidly convert to using the digital medium. Due to his immense talent in computer technology, from a past life as a software engineer, he has been able to fully embrace the flexibility of shooting digitally and helped develop highly successful image processing software and is seen as an expert in the use of digital media in the complex field of wildlife photography whilst retaining the integrity and truthfulness of the original wild image. He has the ability to express this knowledge in its most basic form to help even the most novice photographer get the most from their images.

Awards

Andy’s work has been acknowledged as being some of the best in the world for many years. He has consistently won awards in the prestigious BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition and to date has won 7 awards in the past 5 years. He has also been runner up in the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year and had several winners in the Nature’s Best competition too. He still does not have a Blue Peter or a Tufty badge though.

Conservation

Andy’s talent in wildlife photography comes from a love of animals and the environment, his photography only being a “tool to show others the beauty of the natural world”. He works alongside many top scientists, animal researchers, conservation organizations and wildlife charities throughout the globe, from frozen polar wastes and tropical jungle; to initiatives on his doorstep. He has recently instigated a partnership with Paramo directional clothing, suppliers of ethical/ecological outdoor clothing to help the ‘Aspira Fund’. The charity is designed to collect funds for worthy environmental/conservation causes and is one of the ways in which Andy helps to give something back. So far the fund has contributed to research projects into tigers, little owls and capercaillie and it is hoped that these contributions can make a real difference. In 2009 Andy published a special limited edition print called Generations that gave 100% of its profits to the United Nations Year of the Gorilla.
